Dallas Sports

Want to relive the glory days? Looking to meet new people? Need a new physical activity? Whatever your reason for looking for recreational sports, they are available in Dallas!

There are 2 social sports leagues in Big D: Dallas Sports and Social Club and Big D Sports and Entertainment. Each organization has a variety of sports available; pretty much there isn't a sport that's not offered.

DSSC has softball, flag football, volleyball, outdoor soccer, dodgeball, kickball, bowling and basketball. Most sports are coed teams. Starting in April, a new men's flag football league is offered. A few sports have a recreational league (beer league for people who want to have fun and drink beer) and an intermediate level (more competitive level of skill.)

NOTE/WARNING: I unfortunately had the pleasure of playing on a co-ed intermediate flag football team. When girls show up in mouth guards and gloves, I should have run away. Fast. If that's the level of competition you're looking for, great, but I won't be joining you! Personally I'll be playing soccer and heading to the sponsor bar for beers and fried food. Each season, there is a sponsor bar that offers drink and food specials. Sponsor bars have included Frankies and San Francisco Rose.

Every season, DSSC hosts a Happy Hour at a local bar. It inlcudes all sports, the officials, and your friends. Drink specials are given to DSSC and there is usually some kind of food involved. It's a great time to see the players off the field. In the past, happy hours have been at McKinney Avenue Tavern, Black Finn and M Street Bar.

Big D Sports offers softball, bowling, flag football, golf, kickball, soccer, tennis and volleyball. There are also sponsor bars for after play entertainment. Sponsor bars have included Tipperary Inn, Metro Grill, Milo Butterfingers and Highpoint Restaurant and Club. Big D Sports also has a variety of social activities: St. Patty's Day party on Lower Greenville, Bar Olympics at Milo Butterfingers, First Friday happy hours, wine tastings, pub crawls and many more! Drink specials are a given for all events.

In April, Big D Sports will be hosting a women's flag football tournament. It is a double elimination tournament so you'll at least get to play 2 games. Particiapation and championship prizes will be given out and there is a sponsor bar to enjoy before or after the games!

If you don't think you have enough people to make a team, or want to sign-up individually, both organizations have forums on their website for you to find a team. You can't go wrong with whichever legaue you decide to join. In fact, join both for double the fun!

St. Patty's Day

It's a little late notice, I know, but I still feel there is time to get the info out there and salvage a day of debauchery.

The St. Patrick's Day parade on Lower Greenville is comprable to other cities' Mardi Gras. The parade starts with a 5k run at 8:30 AM. I truly commend people for getting up that early and getting there workout in before they drink themselves silly during the day. The parade is scheduled to start at 11:00 AM but it NEVER starts on time. However, you still need to stake your claim pretty early Saturday morning if you actually want to catch the parade. Bring chairs, booze and a camera. The corner of Lovers and Greenville seems to be the biggest party spot. The Shuck N' Jive parking lot and the CVS parking lot have tons of people and the most readily available bathrooms. They are available but you will have to wait.

Once the pararde is over, don't worry, there is boozing and craziness to continue. Lower Greenville has a rather large block party. Restaurants and bars have tables and tents set up on the street to make sure you do not go thirsty. Bring cash, as they do not take anything else. If you can make your way into the bar, they will take debit and credit. It is VERY crowded, but only full of a lot of drunk people having a lot of fun!

My personal favorite, is the "After-Party" concert. The last 2 years have been the Toadies. This year, organizers are presenting Ghostland Observatory.(www.myspace.com/GhostlandObservatory or http://www.trashymoped.com/) These are 2 guys from Austin, TX, that will completely rock the house, aka Energy Square. Per their myspace page, their influences include artists such as Jerry Lee Lewis, Prince, The Doors and "Anyone With Balls." If forced to categorize Ghostland, it would be Elctro/Punk. Personally, I categorize them as awesome! Beer is sold in the concert, gates open at 12, but you are able to drink and party outside the gates in the street and the concert starts at 3:00 PM. Just a heads up, the gas stations and delis are PACKED and take at least 45 mins to 1 hour to buy beer, or use the restroom.

As always, please be safe, don't drink and drive. Hope to see ya out there!
